Launched in 2003, the Freedom Challenge is an initiative to achieve the following goals:
- Establish the Freedom Trail, a fully serviced mountain bike trail running across the interior of South Africa and to develop services around the trail.
- To organise an annual event on the Freedom Trail in order to publicise it.
- To support community-based conservation and adventure tourism projects along the Freedom Trail.

ESTABLISHMENT OF THE FREEDOM TRAIL
The 2003 WESSA Cross Karoo Challenge successfully tested the viability of the Trail that has now been launched as the Freedom Trail - the route remains largely unchanged.
By ensuring meals and accommodation are available every 50- 80 kilometres it should be possible to travel the Trail unsupported and without having to carry bedding or food (other than emergency rations).
