Extreme Triathlon


Exploring your soul.

  • 88 km ROAD RUNNING in the Comrades Marathon, South Africa's biggest ultramarathon from Durban on the coast of the Indian Ocean to Pietermaritzburg on 15 June.
  • 2300 km MOUNTAIN BIKE, non stop unassisted race from Pietermaritzburg on 17 June along South Africa's Freedom Trail to end in Paarl outside Cape Town before the 11 July cut-off.
  • 240 km RIVER PADDLE in the 4 day staged Berg River K1 Canoe Marathon which starts in Paarl on 9 July and ends in Velddrif on the Atlantic coast on 12 July in 2008.

  • Run: 88 kms on 16 June
  • Mountain Bike: 2300 kms non-stop  Race Across South Africa from 16 June - 8 July (estimated riding time for stage winners: 15 - 17 days)
  • Paddle: 240 kms from 9 July to 12 July

Entry fee does not cover Comrades or Berg entries.  Individuals must registered directly with the respective events.

                      ~ Cut offs at Mountain Zebra National Park, Prince Albert
                      ~ Participants must arrive in Paarl in time to start the Berg River Canoe Marathon on 9 July

                      ~ Time cut-off on Day 1 - participants must reach Hermon bridge within 6 hours of the start.  

EVENT SUPPORT

The mountain bike stage is UNSUPPORTED.

  • No individual seconding is permitted during the mountain bike stage.
  • All meals and accommodation (including bedding) are provided at approximately 25 support stations spaced at intervals approximately 100 kilometres apart along the length of the Trail.
  • Participants may also pre-ship a 2 litre personal package to each support station to collect as they pass through.


The mountain bike stage is NON-STOP with only two enforced dark zones (unless weather or wild animals necessitate more).  It is within an individual participant's discretion to decide whether they wish to utilise the accommodation provided at each support station.

The following support is available during the race:

  • COMRADES MARATHON
    Refreshment tables are provided every 3 kms with Coke, Energade and water.

  • NIGHT OF 15 JUNE:
    Overnight accommodation on 16 June for elite participants.

  • FREEDOM TRAIL RACE ACROSS SOUTH AFRICA 
    Support Stations every 100kms (approx) providing all meals, sponsored supplements and accommodation. Challengers may pre-ship one 2 litre box of personal supplements, maps and other requirements to each support station.

  • BETWEEN RIDE & PADDLE
    Overnight accommodation for individual participants in Paarl from when they complete the mountain bike stage to the commencement of the canoe stage.

  • BERG RIVER CANOE MARATHON
    Overnight meals and accommodation, transfers to the start and from the finish of each day, two seconding points on the river each day.
