Freedom Challenge Race Rules


The Freedom Challenge Race Across South Africa is a non-stop unsupported mountain bike race starting in Pietermaritzburg and ending in Wellington, outside Cape Town. The Freedom Challenge Race to Rhodes is a non-stop, unsupported mountain bike race starting in Pietermaritzburg and ending in Rhodes. The rules set out below apply to both races, unless otherwise stated.




The object of the Freedom Challenge is for participants to complete the route in the shortest possible time under their own power and without the aid of others.

To that end, the rules set out below will govern the Race Across South Africa and Race to Rhodes.

If you’ve done a few Epic’s, remember no one other than your mother cares, this ride is different, there are no dancing girls at the finish line (in fact there is no real finish line), no fabulous goodie bag (although we did get a cool top, the wrong size) no stroking of ego’s, no timing mat (you could time the slow group with a sun dial but only if it worked at night!), no massages, no sanitised food, no music and video display at dinner, I think you get the picture.... Spring Ride to Rhodes Overview

Arising from overwhelming demand for places in the June Freedom Challenge Race Across South Africa and the parallel Ride to Rhodes, as well as the Heritage weekend Rock Art Tour, the Freedom Challenge hosted its inaugural Ride to Rhodes Spring Tour as a separate 6 day - 7 night 500km event in September 2012.  The success of the tour means that it will be repeated in September each year.

As the 2300km 2012 Freedom Race Across South Africa moved through the mountains of the Maluti Drakensberg and across the treeless and windy plains of the Stormberg plateau, the battle for many of the riders became one merely for survival.
