I am a big fan of the Lake MX 168 shoe. It is available in a 'wide' fit and a good option for those with wide feet. In the past I have ridden with:
•Mavic XA - great shoe, comfy but feet got very cold and possibly too much flex.•Shimano gor-tex (MT7) - good for cold but stay they waterlogged after river crossings and I found them too narrow for my wide feet.•Specialized recon 2.0 - gave me hotfoot but many people like this shoe as it has good toe flex which is good for hiking sections. Note the Recon 2.0 has better toebox flex than the recon 1.0 or 3.0•Fizik - Ergo lace - Good option and really liked these but they are hard to source in SA. Lace-up is an advantage for RASA as BOA's can break and velcro can sometimes come loose in grass and mud. Ergo-lace also comes in gor-tex option which is warm but also gets water-logged during river crossings
+1 for the lakes. I used these and had no issues, although they wouldnt survive a second RASA:). Shoes are a critical consideration having now done this thing. Being able to walk comfortably in robust shoes that can take getting wet and dry a lot is critical.
Used shimano xm7 for 2.9 RASAs. moved to shimano mt7 for 2022 RASA due to lack of availability of xm7. Both are gore tex but mt7 were a bit tighter. Would go back to xm7 if I could get them
