Race to Willowmore route

The Freedom Challenge Race to Willowmore (RTW) is one of the most memorable stretches of the trail, carrying riders through two of its most iconic sections: the rugged crossing of the Osseberg and the wild beauty of the Baviaanskloof. The Osseberg demands grit and determination, with steep climbs, multiple river crossings and technical navigation that tests even the strongest. While the Baviaans offers an untamed wilderness experience; towering cliffs, more river crossings, and a sense of riding through a world untouched by time. After these formidable challenges, the wide skies and rolling plains of the Karoo open up, where the legendary warmth and generosity of its people provide comfort, meals, and encouragement that riders never forget. It is this blend of raw challenge and heartfelt hospitality that makes the journey to Willowmore so uniquely special.

The route follows the Freedom Trail from Cradock to Willowmore through the Karoo and Baviaans regions of South Africa along a wide variety of off-road terrain – dirt roads, farm roads and tracks, footpaths and animal tracks. Many of the trails retrace old historic wagon routes which are no longer in regular use. Apart from the riding, there are numerous portage sections where riders will have to hike, push and even carry their bikes.

From Cradock riders head over Swaershoek Pass down to Darlington Dam via Pearston then through Kleinpoort and into the Baviaanskloof through the Grootrivierpoort and infamous Osseberg jeep track section (very overgrown). Riders then pass through the length of the majestic Baviaanskloof World Heritage Reserve and over Nuwekloof pass to Willowmore.
