The Baviaans Meander is a new Freedom Trail Tour offering following on from the very popular "Karoo Meander" that has now seen more than 150 happy riders getting to experience the raw beauty of the Freedom Trail in a more relaxed and comfortable fashion than the traditional Freedom Challenge events.
This is an opportunity to learn the ropes of the trail, under the guidance of an experienced tour leader, including how to navigate using maps and a compass (feel free to use a GPS as well!). Experience the amazing hospitality of the legendary host support stations. E-Bikes are welcome. Plenty of chilled stops, the intention is to have some fun on the trail.

Set in the Karoo Midlands, the Baviaans area features majestic mountains rising from rolling plains, with lush green valleys providing stark contrast. With stunning sunsets and clear, starry nights, the Baviaans offers a taste of life at its unspoilt best. Known for small stock farming and for the richness of its endemic plant species, its interesting cultural heritage and its abundance of bird and animal life, the Baviaans area holds ample opportunity for some of the most beautiful mountain biking imaginable.
Route
The route takes riders on the beautiful portion of the Freedom Trail in the Baviaans region. The route starts from just outside Steytlerville and links up with the Freedom trail on the first day en route to Bucklands Guest farm then follows the Freedom Trail through the Grootrivierpoort and Baviaanskloof all the way to Willowmore with the exception of the bypass around the Osseberg portage. Day 1 -  72km : The tour starts from Noorspoort Guest Farm, a lovely oasis 5km north of Steytlerville and heads north up through the beautiful Draaikrans valley. This rock formation is about 60 million years old and was formed when suitable temperatures and pressures bent horizontal sedimentary layers into the folds we see today. The route then swings eastwards toward the exquisite Haaspoort valley for miles and miles of beautiful gravel track which snakes its way through the Boschfontein Mountains before linking up with the Freedom Trail for the last 20km in Bucklands. Riders will enjoy nice picnic lunch somewhere in the Haaspoort Valley. Day 2. -  79km : The route crosses the Grootrivier a couple times (usually dry) then snakes it's way along beautiful jeep tracks around the Perdeberg Mountain to a brunch stop at Hadley Guest Farm, which is another favourite Freedom Challenge Support Station. From Hadley you decend down through the majestic Grootrivierpoort and tackle the challenging but rewarding climb out the other side. Riders will pass the Osseberg turn off and continue East down to Mount Ingwe Farmstay. An interesting overnight stop that even has its own Boer war Museum. Day 3  -  61km : The shortest day but starts with some challenging climbs along breathtaking mountain tracks before dropping into Patensie for lunch. After lunch there is a 35km relatively flat stretch following the Grootrivier into the Baviaans to finish at Kudukaya for a famous Buffalo Herder Braai. Day 4. -  76km : The fourth day is probably the most challenging as riders tackle the Baviaanskloof Nature Reserve  – the third largest protected area in South Africa. The Baviaanskloof area is one of outstanding natural beauty, owing to its spectacular land forms, a diverse array of plants and wide variety of animals. This is sure to be one of the most magical days you will ever have on a bicycle with breathtaking views (and climbs) all day long. Riders must stick together through the 47km within the reserve gates and will be escorted by the "Buffalo Herder" as this is a ECPTA requirement due to Buffalo risks. Riders will be treated to a lovely picnic lunch at Smitskraal picnic site. Day 5. -  80km : The final day is the longest but follows a decent gravel road all the way through the impressive Baviaans sleutel and up the Nuwekloof pass to finishing Willowmore at the very comfortable Willow Historical Guesthouse.
