    Summer or Winter?

    in General Discussion

I really don't want to deal with the winter cold, so am keen to do a summer RASA. What are the pros and cons of each?

I'm sure acquiring fresh water will be the biggest challenge during Summer. I used 2 Jojo water filtering bottles during winter. Not a bad idea to have at least one of these in October. jojo.co.za Search under water filtration products.

Summer rasa: Water was a big problem. No hiding from the heat. We had sleet riding into Masakala. -2 one day then 40+. Ended up riding a few nights and sleeping in the day to escape the heat. after all the mud and rain of winter 2022 I’m not sure which one I would prefer doing. At least you can dress up for the cold. All said and done winter or summer it will be challenging

Thanks Grant - I wondered about the water issue. It doesn't help that I drink A LOT of fluid while riding. I think that my head does better in the heat than the cold, though. This week I decided to commit to this Oct's RASA - so I'll just have to prepare as best as possible.

Winter is cold but weather more predictable. Summer more variation and higher chance of rain. Days longer in summer, extra 2-3 hours daylight per day is probably biggest advantage. Summer can be VERY hot, especially in karoo. 40 degress plus sometimes. Summer has more lightning, snakes, thicker bush, mud, high rivers. Winter can very VERY cold! -14 recorded at one place during RASA 2021
