I did take spare spokes with me and did end up using 2 when a piece of metal post jumped up and damaged the rear spokes which later snapped

Chamois and bibs: take two different kind of padded chamois. This help relieve pressure left from the previous ride with those shorts. I found this to be very helpful. Carry a small water filter like the Sawyer Mini Water Filter in case you do run out of water, these are small enough, but can become a lifesaver. When I got into the SS, after my shower, I got dressed in my my riding gear for the next day. Not only do you save on space and weight, you don't have to get dressed in cold clothing the next morning, but this was me. Peter is right, buy the best cycling gear you can afford to stay dry and warm in while riding. A golden rule I use when I start in the mornings is not to dress up too much (almost shivering). Once you start to move and work you'll heat up and the clothing will start doing its job by regulating you heat/sweat output and get rid of the moisture. IF you don't you start to sweat and the excess moisture buildup will cause the gear not to insulate as well anymore.

My gravel bike set-up, fast & smooth enough. Might have try it out on the FC one day.

I have done the backpack thing, but went for bike bags this year and it worked well as I didn't carry a lot of "extra" gear with me. If you want to carry a backpack look at the Salomon 12L or 15L runners backpack, these fits snug on the body and allow for at least most of your clothing to be stored on your back and some water in the 2 front chest pockets. Then there are the stretchy mesh pockets that can also double as feed storage. This will come close to around 3-4 kg on the back which in my opinion is the max I would like to carry. Hi Craig, I wouldn't consider my bike as a true gravel bike, but more as a hardtail bike with gravel bars. You'll be fine riding with all your gear on your bike, but I would still suggest looking at a small(10L backpack, running pack) to store water and maybe to soften the load when you do carry your bike on your back.

I used to get that problem all the time, but since I change my handle bar set-up to gravel drop bars (Salsa Cowchipper 52cm) with a 50mm stem I had a 98% reduction of these symptoms. In 2019 I used Tri bars and it did alleviate some of the symptoms, but I still had some (minor) numbness. Hope this helps.

I have had a few successful rides on a couple of different shoes. Very comfortable walking shoe. The only downside was that the laces did come undone at time when walking through tall grass (Mordor). Also carry more than 2 belts if you planning on riding with belt drive....😂 A very good lesson to learn is to know how your bike works. If you can, and your mechanic allows you, as him to put you on the tools and teach you how to change and plug tubeless tyres, brake pads, set gears and (hopefully never to happen) change spokes. I also make the point of using Locktite on most of my bolts especially the brake callipers as the heat creates expansion and shrinkage and eventually starts loosening.
