I always wonder why freedom challenge riders carry such big backpacks? would it not be easier to pack more gear onto the bike in saddle bag and/or frame bag? handlebar roll also an option? Seems to me that it would take less weight off the rider and saddle pressure?

Looking at the pictures, some riders seem to have map-boards and others don't. Is a map-board advised and any tips on which one is best? what about carrying maps in my pocket or bike pouch and taking them out when required?

I am hoping to do RASA next year. I have heard that it is wise to draw on experience of those who have completed it before. Is there any advice experienced riders can offer that I might not find in the standard race info and rider's manual? Thanks in advance.
